Although I would wholeheartedly agree that an online presence is an essential part of doing business in the 21st century for both law firms and lawyers in private practice, one doesn't need to have to have a blog in order to have such a presence. In fact, a website isn't even necessarily required as a simple Facebook page could suffice for newer law practices.

I don't think the value of a law firm blog is in getting readership, but in having content up for someone to find when then need it.

If I'm marketing my practice to consumers, chances are that their legal issues are not going to be so persistent that they're going to grab my RSS feed. For example, few people get divorced so often that they become interested in keeping up with a family law blog.

On the other hand, if a firm maintains a family law blog, their organic search score will gradually increase for their keywords. A blog also gives the blogger a way of increasing a website's content without having to make new pages or write articles that would stand outside of a blog. One of my most frequently hit blog entries concerns the copyright licensing issues with bringing WKRP in Cincinnati to DVD. That information wouldn't be on my site unless I was able to turn it into a few hundred word blog post.
