“If you have something that you don’t want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn’t be doing it in the first place,” Google CEO Eric Schmidt has said.

Terrible. The fact that so much information is in the hands of someone with this philosophy is troubling.

Privacy does not mean bad. What married couples do in their bedroom is a private thing and is not considered bad, even by the religious right. I'm sure Mr. Schmidt would not want photos of his "private parts" floating around the Internet. Just because he has "private parts" and would rather keep them unseen from public doesn't make him bad.

When someone keeps a private written diary, a recording of their own most intimate thoughts, are we to infer based on Mr. Schmidt's comments that some nastiness is taking place? Or if I'm planning a surprise party, or buying a present, or doing any number of other things that involves me not wanting to disclose information - should I "not be doing it in the first place?"
