Rumor has it that deadline for comments regarding the proposed changes to the New York lawyer advertising rules has been extended to November 15, 2006, although the OCA website does not yet reflect the extension.
Also of interest is the FTC's recent criticism of the proposed rules. On September 14, 2006, the FTC submitted a comment to the OCA in which it asserted that the proposed rules unnecessarily restrict the dissemination of truthful information and are likely to "limit and harm consumers" in New York State.
A number of bloggers outside of New York have discussed this issue as of late, so I thought it would be a good time to post another round up of posts on this issue:
- Law.com's Legal Blog Watch: Bloggers Keep On Blogging Out Against N.Y.'s Proposed Advertising Rules (which linked to a few Sui Generis posts regarding the new rules)
- Consumer Law and Policy Blog: This Blog Is False and Misleading (in New York)
- The Volokh Conspiracy: Will New York Law Bloggers Find It Much Harder To Blog?
- Real Lawyers Have Blogs: FTC criticizes proposed NY attorney ad restrictions and New York legal blog restrictions a fraud on consumers
- Ars Technica: New York courts may keep lawyers from blogging
I already submitted my comments regarding the proposed rules, but if you haven't yet done so, it appears that you still have time.
