walterolson:RT @HouCrimLaw UK lawyer asks "Is jury selection important?" Over there it's less so http://is.gd/g2Q8
- HouCrimLaw: @walterolson Less important? Nonexistent, apparently!
- walterolson: @HouCrimLaw I gather some years back over there they streamlined an already-short selection process to ensure even quicker empanelment
- walterolson: @HouCrimLaw My own view is that streamlining jury selection would advance both justice & freedom. But that's an argument for another day.
- feral_child: @walterolson It would advance randomness in individual cases that's for sure. Not sure about justice. Might promote more habeas/Rule 59 mtns
- HouCrimLaw: @walterolson Spend much time in federal court?
- walterolson: @HouCrimLaw Oh, I see. Then let's interrupt crim trials every 4 hrs to hold a quilting bee. Opposite of streamlining = more freedom, right?
- HouCrimLaw: @walterolson Absurdly, right. Less government efficiency in taking away our freedom or our property = more freedom.
- walterolson: @HouCrimLaw Similarly for 30-day strike of crim court personnel? 5-yr? Permanent?
- HouCrimLaw: @walterolson Yep. More freedom. Less safety. Trick is that we need a modicum of safety; problem is that government is selling us too much.
- HouCrimLaw: @walterolson Streamlining of the justice system will be the de ath of freedom.
- JuryVox: @walterolson I'd love to join in on that "streamlining" discussion. Judges already have cut the balls off of voir dire.
- walterolson: @JuryVox Why don't I hand you over to @HouCrimLaw and @feral_child, I think you all agree on it. You see a nat'wide trend to restrict, then?
- JuryVox: @walterolson There is a general distrust and impatience with voir dire exhibited by many judges. The "speed dating" approach is common.
-
walterolson: @JuryVox Speed dating? I'd make lawyers carry on voir dire at Twitter length: Cd U B fair 2 deft 'cused of 3d offense & hittg cop?
